About Us

Jan Merkley is a small business owner who started sewing as a young girl and in 2012 started making quilts in her spare time.  In 2015, while eating breakfast and growing weary of burning her hands every time she removed her oatmeal from the microwave, she saw a rounded fabric bowl online that was used to put a bowl in after taking it out of the microwave.  Intrigued about the look of the fabric bowl and using her sewing skills, she tweaked it until it was squared, and found that using 100% cotton inside and out would make it safe to use in the microwave.  She crafted one into a bowl cozy using her quilter's cotton to hold the bowl in the microwave so she wouldn't burn herself anymore.  She used it for her oatmeal and to reheat soups and stews.  Soon she was making them for friends and family.
She expanded the line to include casserole carriers, double oven mitts and most recently tater totes and then face masks in 2020.  She began making gift sets and started selling her products in craft fairs periodically.
Now Too Hot To Handle Cozies and More is in craft fairs year round as well as in 3 mall shops and now online. Jan enlisted the help of her husband Brandon and together the two of them lovingly make their cozies and more for all to use with an ever expanding catalog of fabrics and designs.
